Strategic Optimism and Defensive Pessimism
There are two tactics for preparing for public speaking – the principles of defensive pessimism and strategic optimism. Each of these strategies has its own characteristics and can be effective depending on the situation and the speaker's personality type.
How does defensive pessimism work?
Defensive pessimism works in case of a person's unpreparedness for public speaking. The speaker critically evaluates all risks and negative consequences, thereby motivating themselves to either refuse the public speech or prepare more thoroughly for it.
That is, activation of mental processes through the threat of danger can ultimately transform into a quality public speech. The principle is effective, but not for everyone. Some people may delve too deeply into negative scenarios, which will lead to paralyzing fear instead of motivation to prepare.
What is strategic optimism?
Some of us follow the principle of strategic optimism. In this case, all options of failure and mistakes are excluded. The principle is based on informational preparation, experience, and self-confidence.
Strategic optimists’ speeches are much brighter, and their set goals are achieved more often. Strategic optimists concentrate on positive results, which allows them to speak more confidently and naturally.
How to combine both strategies for maximum effectiveness?
Both principles are effective. They come down to one common denominator – evaluating the level of your preparation for public speaking, emotional mood, and predicted result.
In the process of preparing for a speech, first use critical thinking, and during the speech – the tactics of a strategic optimist. Such a combination allows quality preparation by anticipating possible difficulties, but at the same time speaking with a positive mood and confidence.
The goal is to produce positive emotions from your public speech. A correctly chosen strategy will help achieve this goal regardless of your type of thinking and level of experience in public speaking.
